00:22 ROBIN
Well, hello, everyone. My name is Robin J Emdon, and I am the creator of the GetResultsology system and an accountability coach.
I help people harness productivity to achieve meaningful results, increase income, grow their business, and create success that resonates with their authentic selves.
Joining me today is Liz Wilcox.
Liz is the queen of email marketing for real businesses.
Known for her ability to write newsletters fast and get subscribers to buy, Liz has turned her love of connecting through email into a thriving career. Her journey began in 2010 after getting fired from a fried chicken job, freelancing her way to freedom via Craigslist.
She then became a successful blogger creating and selling all kinds of digital products. Yes, even a book about poop! In 2019, Liz sold her blog to focus solely on teaching entrepreneurs how to make email fun, simple, and wildly profitable. Whether you're struggling to sell your offer or just need to get started, Liz's no nonsense pop culture infused approach will have you ready to hit send. Liz, welcome.
LIZ
Oh my gosh. I love that intro. I gotta… can I get the transcript? I gotta write that down.
That's so good. Let's just grab a round of applause for that. That's great. Five star review right here.
Oh, that's doing. Go leave a review. This is great.
ROBIN
Well, you're very welcome. I'll send you a transcript, so my rates are very reasonable. I'll have you know.
LIZ
Okay. Fabulous. Fabulous.
ROBIN
No. Of course, I will. My pleasure. Thank you for that. It's so nice of you to say. Whereabouts are you, Liz?
LIZ
I am in the Panhandle of Florida, which is some people call it lower Alabama.
I'm very far away from Disney.
People don't realize how big Florida is, but I live on the Gulf Coast, and I love the beach.
ROBIN
Yeah. I've been to not your quite your area, but I've been on the West Coast of Florida. It's beautiful there. Absolutely beautiful.
LIZ
It's so beautiful.
ROBIN
Yeah. Wonderful. And it's afternoon for you, and it's evening for me.
So let's crack on, shall we? Are you ready to take the five questions in seven minutes?
LIZ
I'm ready to take it on. Let's do this.
ROBIN
Let's do it. Okay. So I'm gonna start the clock, and there it goes. So first, let's talk about what you do, please, Liz. Who's your ideal client?
03:00 LIZ – Ideal Client
My ideal client is someone in the first three years of their online business, someone that, knows that they need email marketing. They've heard about it. They're aware of it, but they have a real aversion to it.
ROBIN
Okay. That's very succinct and very clear. I I love that. Thank you. So then can we expand on that a little bit by explaining what is the problem that you solve?
03:31 LIZ – Problem Solved
The problem that I solve is that aversion. I take people from, oh my gosh. I don't know. Email marketing feels like this not. I'm never gonna be able to untangle to, wow. Email marketing is actually kinda simple, fun. I've been overthinking it, but now I write weekly newsletters that connect and convert my subscribers.
ROBIN
Okay. That's brilliant. And a brilliant service you offer there. I know it's emails has have been a conundrum that have confused and confuddled me for years and still do. So, it's lovely to meet someone who knows what they're talking about. Alright.
So my third question then, please, is what is one valuable free action that the audience could implement that would help them solve that problem, please?
04:20 LIZ – Valuable Free Action (VFA)
So the same way Robin sets up this podcast every single week and says, this is my guest. This is what we're talking about. We've got five questions in seven minutes is the same way you want to walk away today and start a welcome sequence.
So something that tells people, hey. This is what's going on, and this is what is about to go down now that you joined my email list. And the one thing, the one really actionable thing, if you already have a nurture on boarding or welcome sequence, those are all the same thing. If you already have one of those, in the first email, just tell people, I am going to offer you free and paid resources, services, products, whatever word you wanna use. That way people know, hey…You are a business and not just someone that gives away free content.
ROBIN
Excellent. And thank you for the name drop there. That was unexpected. Thank you.
That's exactly what I'm doing. Thank you very much. Brilliant. So now we know a little bit more about what you do.
Let's talk about GoalBusting, which is the name of our podcast. Meaning, how do you make best use of your productive time to achieve your business goals? So specifically, Liz, can you share any tips or advice for someone looking to improve their productivity habits?
05:40 LIZ – Valuable Productive Action (VPA)
Yeah. So something that I do that's a little unconventional, and if you're watching the video, you can see I'm in my living room right now. So every sixty to ninety days, I change the environment in which I work to be more productive. I find after about two, three months, I start to get stale.
It's like, oh, another day in the office. Right? Which, if you listened to Robin's bio of me, I've never even worked in an office. Right?
And so every sixty to ninety days, I'll change up my environment, whether it's just moving the desk, to a different part of the room. Or right now, I'm on this, like, wheeling desk. It's very small. It's probably only, like, thirty inches, and I just wheeled myself out into the living room.
And I've been here for a few weeks, and I assume in January or February, I'll go back to the office. So my productivity tip is to just change up your environment or how your environment looks every sixty to ninety days.
ROBIN
Wow. I don't think I've heard that before. And I can certainly testify to the desk on wheels because when we first met a few minutes before we started recording, I had a little wheel tour of your lounge. It was amazing.
And, yeah, it's all about, mixing, bringing in a little bit of variety and then not letting things go stale isn't it? And just yeah I love that.
I absolutely love it. Thank you. So this my final question then is a little bit of a question for you to free wheel and basically say what you'd like to say because I love this question. What should I have asked you today that I didn't?
And, of course, your answer.
LIZ
So, of course, this is a podcast all about getting results and being more productive. So I wish Robin would have asked me, how can people be more productive with their email marketing?
And I would answer, stop telling stories. There are a million and one marketers out there that will tell you storytelling, storytelling, storytelling, but it's not a very efficient way to send emails. Right? Emails actually, people aren't looking for storytelling in emails.
They're looking for solutions. They're looking for ways to get results. Right? We're looking for our power bill.
We're looking for that thing from grandma to ensure, you know, she sent over x y z. Right? And so in your emails, when you go to write them, instead of trying to tell stories, use something I like to call a personal update. This does the same as storytelling.
It connects with people. It makes you relatable, but it's very efficient. It makes you incredibly productive. A personal update is just two to three sentences about something you've done since the last time you emailed.
Again, this makes you relatable.
It keeps you top of mind, and it connects in the way that storytelling does, but it's much more efficient.
So, for example, if I was to write an email right after getting off this call, I might say, oh, I was on a podcast and my computer's on wheels, and I was facing the wrong way, and I almost made my host get queasy when I moved the desk too quickly.
Right? Robin is smiling at this. You're probably laughing a little bit. That's not exactly a story, but it is a personal update that gets you relating to me. So, again, how can you be more productive with your email marketing? Stop telling stories and start giving personal updates instead.
ROBIN
Yeah. I can say I'm gonna have to be careful what I say to you.
I might be in the next email and the one after that and the one after that!
LIZ
Yeah. Be careful when you're friends with email marketers.
ROBIN
That's good advice. I might even call the whole podcast that. I joke, I would not. I wouldn't dream of it, but that is good. It is very interesting that what you're getting at there is also it's a personal story.
People are interested in you. They're not, you know, if they don't know who you are, they want they may not be interested in you as, say, a celebrity they'd be interested in. But just hearing little bits like that, it's, oh, okay. So now that person is more relatable, more I can understand them a little bit better.
That's what you're getting at?
LIZ
Exactly. Yes sir.
ROBIN
Thank you, yeah and look at that we're right on time, perfect. I love that. So that was that was, wonderful. Thank you. Lots of value in there. So Liz, I really would love to know how our listeners and our viewers can reach you. And also I always cheekily ask, is there a nice Valuable Free Resource that they can pick up from your website somewhere?
10:14 LIZ – Valuable Free Resource (VFR)
Yeah. Of course. And speaking of productivity and efficiency, you can get it all in one. I am an email marketer.
I'd love for you to join my email list. You can go directly to lizwilcox.com. In the top right hand corner, there's a hot pink button. You can't miss it.
The free resource I wanna give you when you sign up with that hot pink button, you're gonna get that welcome sequence I talked about already written for you. You'll also get three newsletter samples and fifty two subject lines for a year full of prompts for free.
Lizwilcox.com, hot pink button. You can't miss it.
ROBIN
Okay. That sounds brilliant. And I should warn if there's anybody on my mailing list, they might find in the next, few days or weeks that, they will get some of those emails because I'm gonna go and sign up right after this call and get anD start using the technology that you're offering there. That sounds wonderful. Thank you.
LIZ
Great.
ROBIN
Thank you for sharing.
LIZ
That sounds great. Thank you.
You're welcome. I can't wait to see what everybody does with email marketing.
ROBIN
Thank you. And on that note, we will end. And I will say, Liz Wilcox, thank you once again. It's been brilliant. Thank you.
LIZ
Yeah.
ROBIN
Thank you, and bye bye.
