Caroline, welcome to GoalBusters!
CAROLINE
Thank you so much for having me. I'm excited to be here.
ROBIN
You're very welcome. I'm excited you're here too. What part of the world are you in, Caroline?
CAROLINE
I'm in the United States and Florida right now.
ROBIN
And I hope it's… I presume it's sunny Florida today?
CAROLINE
It's very sunny, very warm. A little too warm for my liking.
ROBIN
Yeah, anytime is too warm for my liking. But yeah, brilliant. Okay, so instead of me waffling on about that, shall we do the questions?
CAROLINE
Let's go into it.
ROBIN
Okay, let's get the clock up on the screen and there it goes. Caroline, could you tell us please, who is your ideal client?
02:30 CAROLINE – Ideal Client
Yeah, so I have kind of two parts here. My ideal client is our companies that have plateaued or overextended. So maybe they have just a very small team or no in house marketing resources, their marketing efforts are scattered. And then we also help early stage founders that are navigating the waters of marketing and their brand and trying to kind of figure it out themselves, getting themselves ready to hire but are not yet there.
ROBIN
Okay, perfect. So you've alluded to some of the problems that you solve and I've also mentioned a few of those in the introduction. But would you like to expand on what it is that the problem or problems that you do indeed solve?
03:10 CAROLINE – Problem Solved
Yeah, absolutely. So a lot of the times the challenges and the reason why we target companies that are either plateaued or overextended is because that creates such a bottleneck. A lot of the times people don't struggle with the marketing strategy per se, but they struggle because they're just sort of going through this spaghetti on the wall style strategy and marketing. And that creates issues when it comes to building their brand, having connected effective marketing, but then also too further own operational efficiency, how they're navigating and optimizing their use of their resources.
By that I mean resources by time, money and energy. And so we come in and kind of reset their foundation in a way and make sure that we're building them a marketing engine that has the proper strategy at the forefront, but also allows them to scale, to be more visible, to strengthen their positioning in their industry, and then make sure that internally they're safe to scale as well. Because you can have the best strategy in the world, but if you start falling flat or if you can't seem to execute it, it doesn't matter.
ROBIN
Yeah, brilliant. And I like the fact that you… so basically you're providing the solution to spaghetti marketing.
CAROLINE
Yes, exactly.
ROBIN
Yes, exactly. Yes, like that. I picked up on that early on. I got that. All right. So what is one valuable free action that the audience can implement that will help them to solve that problem?
04:50 CAROLINE – Valuable Free Action (VFA)
Yeah, would say that a lot of the times when you're doing spaghetti marketing or when you're just like, why are my efforts not producing the results I want? Take a look at, write down every touch point that your customer has to go through on paper and really understand what that customer journey is. So how are they reaching through your social media, through your email? How are you navigating them to take the action that you want them to take? And identify if that actually makes sense.
Don't make assumptions. Don't say, okay, well, I have these touch points, so they're going to know what to do next. Truly sit down and audit. Am I guiding them effectively through this?
So if you're posting on social media, is there a clear call to action to drive sign ups to your email? In your email, is there a clear call to action and clear explanations to get them to convert? So really understanding the experience that your customer is going to have with you is going to be huge. Writing that all down on paper and just performing that audit is going to be extremely beneficial.
ROBIN
Yeah, I completely agree with you. Beautiful. Thank you for that. Very comprehensive and great idea. So now that we have a better understanding of what you do, let's dive briefly into GoalBusting, which is focusing on how to maximize productive time to achieve business goals. So could you share any tips or advice for someone looking to improve their productivity habits?
06:20 CAROLINE – Valuable Productive Action (VPA)
Yeah, I would say that especially if you don't have a team that you can delegate, the biggest thing is understanding one, what your block is. Where are you getting like identifying where those bottlenecks are coming up? What are the patterns repeating themselves? So a lot of the times when it comes to spaghetti marketing or inconsistent marketing, a lot of times people are just like, oh, I don't have time or I can never really motivate myself to do this or whatever that may be.
A lot of the times, content is a perfect example for this, creating content for social media. So what I would say is identify the times in the day that you are the most active and energized and clear headed. And then what times in the day do you start to kind of shut your brain off? It's like for me, in particular, I know that I'm more clear headed and creative in the beginning of the day.
And so I do most of my creation there because that's when I know like, okay, things are gonna make more sense. I don't have to worry about it so much. Like my head is on my head, my body, right? But then towards the end of the day, my head is now just melted.
But I still have things to do. So that's when I started to do more administrative tasks. So I think like just really understanding how you naturally flow in the day is one great way that you can really optimize your productivity. But first, have to understand what is really the issue at play.
And that's what I mean, kind of doing a little self audit and understanding, why am I not able to get some things done? Is it because you're just too busy? Is it because you just don't have the headspace to do it? What can you do to kind of optimize that and then work within your kind of organic flow in the day?
ROBIN
Yeah brilliant. Completely agree with you. Managing your energy levels and a better point that you're making there, understanding your energy levels and when they happen is a fantastic skill set to utilise. And so yeah, absolutely, I'm the same.
Creative work in the morning, brain dead work in the evening because you just don't want… you know, you may still have things to do but you don't want to have to think about it anymore because your brain is just, it's gone, it's full of lunch and dinner and you can't even have coffee in the evening if you're sensible like I try to be sometimes…a once in a blue moon. I'm waffling on. I still have one question to ask you and I have no idea what it is. What should I have asked you today that I didn't and what's your answer please?
08:50 CAROLINE – Bonus Material
Yeah, I would say what is the cause of spaghetti marketing? Why is marketing so overwhelming? And I would say that it's because a lot of times people are just trying to get the silver bullet and try to piece things together and they don't really see that marketing is an entire ecosystem. And so, single touch point impacts your sales, impacts your customer journey, which is why my tip earlier, write it all down on paper is so critical because you have to really understand where you could potentially be leaking areas for your marketing to be effective.
ROBIN
Brilliant. Look at that. And I got the feeling you were watching the clock there because you finished exactly on seven minutes. Thank you so much. That was brilliant. And I completely agree with you.
In fact I was thinking you know maybe it's because people just like Italian food but that's probably not the right answer.
CAROLINE
Not exactly!
ROBIN
I think I have gone off the tracks there a bit with that thought. Okay so I do have one more question for you Caroline which is please could you tell us how can people reach you and also is there like a valuable free resource they can get from you and I always say at this point that's a cheeky question to ask but it's not really. I think some people are not quite ready to make contact but they would like to know more about your offer and what you do and that's why I think valuable free resources are such a great idea.
10:10 CAROLINE – Valuable Free Resource (VFR)
Yeah absolutely. So they can find me on my website www.cultiveightcommunications.com. Cultivate is spelled a little bit differently because instead a t e at the end, it's the word eight.
And on that website, you'll find a visibility blocker quiz. So, this is where you can dive in and understand what my blocks are. Why am I struggling? Am I struggling with my systems?
Am I struggling with my creativity? Those types of areas. And then you can figure out the best way to navigate that challenge and kind of go through those blocks like I mentioned above.
ROBIN
Yeah, that's brilliant. Thank you so much. And yours, Cultivate Communications, which is run by Carolyn Crawford, a marketing consultancy, which I had to say at the beginning, I had to do a couple of runs at it didn't it? All those C's!
CAROLINE
Lots of C's!
ROBIN
At least I'll remember it. Thank you so much for sharing that with us and that sounds like a wonderful valuable free resource. Thank you for sharing that too. Caroline, it's been wonderful. Thank you so much. A lot of insight packed into a very, very tiny space of time, and I think we got tremendous value from it too.
CAROLINE
Thank you so much for having me.
ROBIN
You're extremely welcome, and thank you for doing this for us today. It's been a pleasure. Remember everybody, keep GoalBusting and make your future self proud.
