Erin, welcome to GoalBusters.

ERIN
Thank you very much, Robin. Thank you for that introduction.

ROBIN
Oh, you're very welcome. Sounds like an impressive CV you've got there. I'm really looking forward to this. So tell me, what part of the world are you in?

ERIN
I am in, out the exurbs of Washington DC, so Northern Virginia. And, we consider that the mid Atlantic, and, we're having a very interesting summer day here.

ROBIN
Yes. Yes. We I think we briefly discussed beforehand interesting is the word. I mean, we won't and beyond that, we're not going to go any deeper. Otherwise, we'll be here all day talking about things that we did not agree to be talking about. Shall we do the questions instead?

ERIN
Absolutely.

ROBIN
Okay. Let's get the clock up on the screen.

And there it goes. Erin, could you tell me, please, who is your ideal client?

02:50 ERIN – Ideal Client
Yeah. So I think of my ideal client and my ideal audience in the same way, and that is that they are experts, people who are using their expertise to, create value for the clients. And in particular, I focus on experts with corporate clients having worked in corporate America, most of my career, helping them really, preserve their expertise and helping them, decouple their income from their time.

ROBIN
Fantastic. And you've already started to go into the problem, the kind of problem or problems you solve, which often happens when we're talking about our ideal client. Why wouldn't we do that? So maybe you could delve a little bit deeper into that for us.

03:30 ERIN – Problem Solved
Yeah. Absolutely. The problem that people who use their expertise for a living is that they find that it's very difficult for them to decouple their income from their time. So if you wanna sell something that's not our time, then we need to have some other asset to sell.

And when you are an expert, that asset is intellectual property. And by the way, I will be talking with respect to US law today, the extent we get into any kind of legal issues. We'll try to stay away from them. But it'll be intellectual property is the asset that we have as experts.

And so I help them turn their expertise into protectable assets so that they now have an asset that they can sell that is decoupled from their time.

ROBIN
Fantastic. That's very interesting, actually. And very specific. So people will be clear whether or not you they are the kind of customer for you and whether you're the kind of person that would that would help them. So what is one valuable free action that the audience can implement that will help them to go some way towards solving the problem for themselves?

04:40 ERIN – Valuable Free Action (VFR)
You know, can I give two? And I promise I'll make it. So I was torn on this one because I had literally had a call last night from a client that would be my first tip, which is it is so important for you to protect your expertise.

It is yours. The reason the client hires you is because of your expertise. Do not be afraid to protect it. And so when you're working with the corporate client, this was a very large corporate client, and they said we don't want you we don't wanna see any comments to our agreement. And I and I told her it is reasonable for you to ask for comments that protect your expertise.

That is not unreasonable. I don't want you to be afraid to ask for things that will protect your expertise. So that's number one, is that you are allowed to make reasonable requests.

The second thing is if you're going to create an asset, then you need to start building it.

You know, like, you can be the genius in the room and do wonderful work. But if you aren't documenting that process, you'll never be able to create an asset from it. So until you have a documented process, then you won't know how to plug in resources that are less expensive than you. You're the most expensive, you know, resource in your business.

Once we have a process, then is there a technology solution, which we'll be talking about? Is there delegation solution? Is there some other sort of outsourcing solution that's less expensive but still able to deliver the value to your client? So don't be afraid to protect and start documenting your process.

ROBIN
Fantastic. Raising the bar there. Two for one. Amazing. We love that. We love that. Alright. Thank you. That's absolutely brilliant.

So now that we have a better understanding of what you do, or as I always point out, a little bit better understanding, we can't do it all in four minutes. Let's dive briefly into GoalBusting, focusing on how to maximize productive time to achieve business goals.

Could you share any tips or advice for someone looking to improve their productivity habits?

06:45 ERIN – Valuable Productive Action (VPA)
Absolutely. I mean, you cannot talk about increasing productivity in the year twenty twenty five without talking about AI.

And so and I have been pulled into the AI sphere because the intellectual property that I help experts use and protect is copyright.

And so that is, you know, creating assets like frameworks and courses and workbooks and things like that. Those are all protected by copyright.

And when we're using AI, we need to think about, still protecting our expertise. It's still the same exercise of making sure that we are you know, when we're using AI, we aren't, giving it away, because we're using it in a way that it makes it part of somebody else's dataset and that when we are creating assets that we aren't using AI because it's not protectable.

So if I write a book, I can protect it with intellectual property laws. If I use AI to write my book, I cannot protect it, and anybody else can use the same thing. So use AI. I'm a fan of AI. I use AI, but there is the right tool for the right use. Use any tool you want to create your social media posts, but be very careful about what tool you're using. If you wanna create protectable assets, if you're creating client deliverables, if you are using clients' confidential information, then you need to make sure that you're using the right tool.

ROBIN
Yeah. Sound advice and incredibly timely. And well done you for jumping on this this extraordinary phenomenon and getting up to speed on it so relatively quickly. I mean, I hadn't… I barely heard of it a year or two ago personally.

And I was just finishing off my book at that time, and thank goodness I didn't know about it. It would have been I would have been so tempted, but I'm glad I didn't. Anyway, I don't wanna take up any more of your time because I still have to ask you, what should I have asked you today that I didn't? And your answer, please, Erin.

08:50 ERIN – Bonus Material
Well, you know, I am a lawyer, and I do teach people how to use AI legally.

But I'm also human, and so I have my personal feelings about AI. And, so as I mentioned, I do use it. But I do think we need to think more about some of the externalities of using AI, you know, not just, you know, things like energy consumption, which is a very real thing, but also some of the biases that are built in to make sure that we aren't magnifying those biases, making sure that we aren't using it as a replacement for expertise, and also just making sure we don't lose our humanity in the process. So that's why I like to talk about that as well.

ROBIN
Yes. I identify with all of those. The end I always feel guilty when I use AI. I wonder how much energy I'm using just asking it, you know, what's the weather gonna be like today? That's probably not a good use for it. You know?

And the other point is that that that you said about, don't use it to replace certain things. I mean, it's great if you want it to I mean, I use it to help me write copy because it's just so much better than if I try it on my own and does it saves me hundreds of hours, hundreds, literally.

But you it doesn't replace. And the minute you start thinking that it does, you that's a very slippery slope. So thank you for that very timely warning.

Erin, that's been brilliant. Thank you so much. We did it in exactly seven minutes. We have to run a little bit because I was talking. You got it well under the line. So thank you for that.

And, still being respectful of your time and of our audience's time, could you tell me, please, how can people reach you? And also, I always say this is a cheeky question, and it is a cheeky question. But is there like a valuable free resource people can get from you?
And then I point out that, actually, some people aren't always ready to immediately get in touch with somebody. They may actually wanna find out a little bit more about your offer. And the people that produce these valuable free resources, that's a fantastic way of finding out more about what you do and whether or not you think it would work for you and your business. So I always encourage our guests to share that with us.

11:00 ERIN – Valuable Free Resource (VFR)
Yeah. Well, thank you for asking. Well, I pretty much hang out on LinkedIn. It is, essentially my only social media outlet because I, YouTube, I don't quite consider social media.

And so I've been on LinkedIn so long that I like to say I'm the OG Erin Austin. It's just Erin Austin. That's me without anything else. And, and speaking of free resources, now I do have a takeaway.

But if you go to my LinkedIn profile, I have a lot of recordings. I do regular LinkedIn lives where I tackle different IP and AI issues just in fifteen, twenty minutes snippets, and all the recordings are there at my profile. You can go as deep as you want to there.

But, also, I have, a resource that is my framework for helping experts protect and leverage their expertise.

And that is my audit protect leverage framework, and you can find that on my website. So you can also hang out on my website, and that is ThinkBeyondIP.com/framework

And there, you can sign up to, my newsletter email newsletter and get the freebie.

ROBIN
Oh, that's awesome. Thank you so much. So and so many resources you've pointed us out there. And I think sometimes it's tempting to think that, you know, oh gosh, all this paperwork and legal stuff. But it if you are truly… have got expertise and it is original to you, it's moments that it takes to protect it compared to years of anguish if you find yourself fighting someone over control of your own intellectual property. That's right, isn't it?

ERIN
Absolutely. Absolutely.

ROBIN
So it's time it's time and money well spent employing someone like Erin. I completely appreciate that. Thank you so much, and thank you for sharing your time with us today, Erin. It's been wonderful.

ERIN
It's been a pleasure. Thank you for having me.

ROBIN
You're very welcome. And remember, everybody, keep goal busting and make your future self proud. Bye bye.
