00:22 ROBIN
Well, hello everyone. My name is Robin J. Emdon and I'm an accountability coach and the author of Get Resultsology® - The Science of Getting Stuff Done! I work with people who run their own business, no boss, distractions everywhere and never enough hours in the day.
Together we cut through the noise, sharpen their focus and follow through on the big ideas that actually move the needle. That's what I call the momentum formula.
Do it today, profit tomorrow and repeat!
So if that's the kind of breakthrough that you are looking for, then you're in exactly the right place.
And speaking of being in exactly the right place, I am delighted to welcome our guest expert today, Samantha Bennett. Samantha is a best selling author, creativity, productivity expert and founder of TheRealSamBennett.com. With over a million students on LinkedIn Learning, Samantha helps overwhelmed creatives and recovering perfectionists take action on what matters.
Her book, Get It Done, is an instant classic according to Seth Godin. A former Second City actor and branding coach, Sam brings clarity, humor and heart to the work of getting unstuck one small step at a time.
Sam, welcome to GoalBusters!
SAMANTHA
Thank you so much, Robin.
Hi, everybody. Thanks for being here.
ROBIN
You're very welcome. And whereabouts in the world are you, Sam?
SAMANTHA
I'm currently in Connecticut.
I grew up in Chicago and I spent about thirty years in LA and the last couple of years I lived in Connecticut.
Oh, look. And you can see one of my cats behind me there.
ROBIN
Yeah. So we've established quite rapidly that is a normal… that is not a fake screen because there's a real cat in it stealing the show.
Marvelous. Also in Connecticut.
So isn't that good? All right. So that's me waffling on and getting lost in the world of cats. I love cats too but we can't talk about that today.
Shall we do the questions instead?
SAMANTHA
Sounds great.
All right. I'll get the clock up on the screen. And there it goes.
Sam, could you tell me please, who is your ideal client?
02:35 SAMANTHA – Ideal Client
I tend to work with people that I characterize as highly creative people. Highly creative people make up about ten to fifteen percent of the population. Now first of all, let me just say, everyone is creative.
Not everyone is artistic, but everyone is creative. Sometimes there's been a little confabulation between creativity and artistic, and those are two different things. But highly creative people have a grillion ideas all the time. They wake up with ideas. They have ideas about other people's ideas. They they're just little idea machines.
They love nuance and subtlety and gray area, very resistant to orthodoxy and black and white thinking, which means we'll overcomplicate a paper bag.
We hate small talk. We're suspicious of anything that's too popular. You know, we're the people with a ton of interests and skills, good at a lot of things, impatient with a lot of things, and often have a lot of ideas and not so much follow through.
ROBIN
Brilliant. Okay. So you've kind of started to answer the second question as well, which is perfectly normal. Most people do in describing your client. You are obviously describing the problem or beginning to describe the problem that you solve, but maybe now would be a good time to explain a little bit more. I'm sorry, I'm distracted by your cat.
SAMANTHA
I know, she's wonderful, isn't she? Sometimes she just stays up on that book house and then it looks like I have a cat for a hat.
ROBIN
Yeah, so she's a real scene stealer. The problems that you solve, Sam.
04:00 SAMANTHA – Problem Solved
Well, it's a little, a little bit of a magic trick because I think it sounds like from the title of my books and the work that I do, that, like, you know, I'm all about productivity and the strict disciplinarian and get in here, I'm gonna stand over you with a whip make sure you get it done. And that's not really what I do. A lot of what I do is it's not like I've got some incredible system and everybody should do things my way, but I've got some incredible systems for you to figure out what your incredible system is and for you to start on a journey of self inquiry and self forgiveness and the ability to say, you know what?
I got two thirds of the way through that project, and I didn't finish it. And that's okay. I got what I needed out of it. That was my journey with that project.
I read the first third of that book. That was really all I needed to do with that book. Like, I can trust myself that I stop when I need to stop.
And also to maybe get out of the perfectionism.
That's a big one.
ROBIN
Yeah. Absolutely. And I completely agree with you that there is no one size fits all. Oh, that just works. My system works. Anyone tells you they got a system that just works for them. If part of that system isn't you've got to find out what works for you, it's not going to work as a system.
SAMANTHA
Exactly.
ROBIN
Yeah, okay brilliant. So we're on the same page on that. So what is one valuable free action that the audience can implement that will help them to solve that problem?
05:30 SAMANTHA – Valuable Free Action (VFA)
So this is actually the whole topic of my new book, my latest book, is called The fifteen minute method: The Surprisingly Simple Art of Getting It Done. And I wish I had called it the oh, no. I just lost the word. The surprisingly simple the like, the sort of anti intuitive system to getting things done.
Here's the idea. Here's the big idea. Ready?
Spend fifteen minutes a day on something that matters to you.
That's it. Fifteen minutes a day, every single day, preferably before you check your email, on something that matters to you. And whether that's sitting out in the garden with the sun on your face or reaching out to an old friend or clearing this much of the giant pile of paper on your desk or this much of your closet or attending to your finances or doing some deep breathing and dancing in the kitchen, whatever it is that you're like, I really should be doing that. That would really make a difference in my life. But you're not doing it… fifteen minutes a day, every single day.
ROBIN
Yes. And I know where you're coming from on that because it doesn't sound like a lot. But for some people, myself included, you can go days, weeks, months, even years without doing that. And it makes such a difference when you do and you really notice when you haven't.
SAMANTHA
Exactly. And we get, know, we're so busy getting everything done for everybody else all day. And the things that really matter to us that we know would really make a difference to our heart, our soul, our life, our body, our family, our finances somehow don't even make it onto the list.
ROBIN
Yeah, absolutely. Alright. That's brilliant. Thank you. Again, we're on the same page on that. And I and I love the way that you eloquently put it.
Now that we have a better understanding of what you let's dive briefly into GoalBusting, which is focusing on how to maximize productive time to achieve business goals. Could you share any tips or advice for someone looking to improve their productivity habits over and above the ones you've already shared? Because I'm greedy.
07:25 SAMANTHA – Valuable Productive Action (VPA)
Sure. One of the best ones I ever heard was figure out your highest income producing activities and your highest joy producing activities.
What brings you the most income, not just some income because we all know that eighty twenty rule, right? Eighty percent of what you're doing is not generating very much of your profits. Twenty percent of what you're doing is. (This is Chester. That's his opinion. He's my old man kitty).
So, yeah. The highest income producing and then highest joy producing. What gives you energy? What lights you up? What heals your spirit? Spend time on those things because you know when you're walking around with a full heart and a grateful attitude and a cheerful smile, your business goes way better.
ROBIN
Yeah. Absolutely. Brilliant. And I'm really sorry for the people just listening to this because it's much more fun to watch with the cats going on all around Samantha.
SAMANTHA
There's so You must have some magic to you, Robin, because they're not usually this interested.
Oh, I love cats. But we're not a cat podcast, but you know, oh, another cute cat. Yeah, let's do that. All right.
But they're also time wasters and we have to move on. What should I have asked you today, Samantha, that I didn't? And your answer, please. And apart from the names of all your cats.
08:45 SAMANTHA – Bonus Material
Yeah.
Archie, Mehittabelle, and Chester, for those of you who are keeping score at home. I think the thing I wanna remind you is that that little desire on your heart, that little thing that's been tapping you on your shoulder forever, that little idea, whatever it is, it's chosen you.
That's your engraved invitation, and it's not leaving you alone.
So give in. Relent. There's something for you in that project, that whole, like, well, I kinda wanna write a novel, but I don't know anything about writing. That doesn't matter. Pick up a pen. You know, I kinda wanna walk the Appalachian Trail. Great.
Start walking. You know? Like, let's do it. You're only here for a short amount of time. Do the things that matter to you.
ROBIN
Yeah. And, of course, there's that's a title for a book as well. Let's do it. It's absolutely perfect.
And thank you so much. We did that in exactly seven minutes. I have a feeling that you could read a clock really well. Probably been able to do that for most of your life.
So that was really helpful as well. Thank you so much. I do have one more very important question, which is how can people reach you, Sam? That's part A.
Part B is, is there like a valuable free resource that they could get from you? I always say this is a cheeky question and I always point out it's not really. Sometimes people aren't ready to take the step of actually getting in touch directly. They just want to get a little bit more of a flavor of what you do. And that's a very valuable way of doing it.
And I do have a part C, which is I know you've got some pretty cool books there. Please do feel free to share a little bit about those and how we can get hold of those as well.
10:20 SAMANTHA – Valuable Free Resource (VFR)
Happy to. So you can find me online as the real Sam Bennett dot com. So the website is www.therealsambennett.com, and I'm on all the socials as The Real Sam Bennett dot com. And you know my team keeps threatening to make the fake Sam Bennett dot com, which is gonna be me going like, don't do anything. No one cares.
The Real Sam Bennett dot com.
And if you go to TheRealSamBennett.com/pdsk which stands for Procrastination Domination Starter Kit.
So the real Sam Bennett dot com forward slash p d s k, That will take you to my valuable free resource. That's a really great little jump start in getting moving on what matters to you.
And there was a third part. Oh, my books. Yes. Of course. So the first book has been out for eleven years. It's called Get It Done - from procrastination to creative genius in fifteen minutes a day, and it did get endorsed by Seth Godin, which I am a hundred percent not over.
My second book is called Start Right Where You are, how little changes can make a big difference for overwhelmed procrastinators, frustrated overachievers, and recovering perfectionists.
And then my most recent book is The Fifteen Minute Method, the surprisingly simple art of getting it done. They are all available as real books, as Kindle books, as audiobooks. I did the narration myself. So however you like to consume books, I invite you in.
ROBIN
That's fantastic. And I do feel like we've really packed it in today. Thank you so much. We've had talk about value for money.
You packed it. It was a masterclass in seven minutes and we had entertainment going on all around you. For those people watching on the video, the cats were highly entertaining. The only thing I regret is they've actually left and we can't see what they're up to now.
But I'm sure they'll be back if we hang on long enough. But for the people listening, who didn't get the value of the cats, the value of what you told us today was priceless.
I completely agree. I feel like I've found a kindred spirit really in terms of the message that you deliver. And I'm not making that up… people that know about my book will know that I've written about exactly the same things.
SAMANTHA
No, I checked. I did my research, Robin. I looked at your website and I was like, oh yeah, here's my brother.
ROBIN
Yes, absolutely. Yes. Although I don't have any cats on my website. Although funnily enough, people who've seen my book will know that I have illustrations in my book, which my eldest son did for me because he's a professional illustrator and every single one has a cat in it.
So there we go. So who'd have thought it? Must be something about procrastination and cats and productivity.
Thank you, Samantha Bennett. It's been a joy and a real pleasure to meet you and all three of your cats. Thank you once again.
SAMANTHA
Thank you, Robin. Thanks, everybody.
ROBIN
Thank you. And remember, everybody, keep GoalBusting and make your future self proud.
Bye bye.

Robin was one of a small, invitation-only group selected for an intensive life-coach programme taught by Tony Robbins* and his faculty in 2001. The training was meant to prepare them for roles at his organisation in San Diego, but when that opportunity changed Robin stayed in the UK, launched his own life-coaching practice, and later stepped back to raise his two young sons.
Known to clients today as The Procrastination Slayer, Robin had a face-palm moment in 2019 when he realised it had taken him ten years to finish a six-year degree. That wake-up call launched his mission to master procrastination.
During the Covid lockdowns in 2020 he discovered that researchers had published more than 900 studies on procrastination in a single decade and pulled the most practical lessons from the strongest research and leading books to shape his momentum formula:
Do it today, Profit tomorrow, Repeat.
Peer-reviewed research from the Dominican University of California shows that working with an accountability partner can raise goal-achievement rates by up to 33 percent, a finding woven into every GetResultsology® plan.
Robin hosts The GoalBusters Podcast, now past 100 episodes, where he talks with fellow solopreneurs and uncovers the real-world productivity tactics behind their success.
