MICHELLE
Thank you for having me, Robin. I'm thrilled to be here.

ROBIN
I'm thrilled you're here too, and you are here from a long way away. We established whereabouts. Are you again?

MICHELLE
I am in Seattle, Washington. It's very sunny today and very, very cold.

ROBIN
Well, it's very cold here, but it's not sunny. I mean, we are 8 hours apart. I can't believe that… the wonders of the Internet never cease to amaze me.

MICHELLE
I know. I know. You're in the future.

ROBIN
I'm in the future. That's right. I said to you, I'm gonna let you know what to expect from the rest of the day. Wouldn't it be fun if that was possible?

Alright. Are we ready to do some questions? Serious ones, not silly ones like that.

MICHELLE
Alright. Yes. We are.

ROBIN
Alright. I'm gonna start the clock. It should appear on the screen.

And there we go. So first, Michelle, let's talk about what you do. Who is your ideal client, please?

02:55 MICHELLE – Ideal Client
Yeah. My ideal client is a solo business owner who is well established. So think, like, five plus years in business.

They are excellent at what they do, but they find themselves having to juggle the client delivery, the marketing, the sales, and they'd much rather just be working with their clients than trying to find the next client.

ROBIN
Oh, yeah. Amen to that. I love that. Okay. So you've already touched on it, obviously, but I'm sure you solve more than one problem. So can we give me an idea, please, of what are the problems that you solve?

03:35 MICHELLE – Problem Solved
Yeah. So my people, marketing sucks for them. And the reason that it sucks is they put in a lot of time, and they don't see the results of their right fit clients showing up. Like, my people tend to be great at sales, but they can't get enough people to, like, hop on the phone with them.

And they're overmarketers, so they're trying to do all of the things. And then what happens is they start doubting their own expertise. Like, if I'm so great at what I do, why can't I talk about it in my marketing?

And, obviously, like, there's a revenue impact to that. And at the at the end of it, they need to do less marketing to see better results, but they also need to dial in their messaging.

ROBIN
That's incredibly powerful, and I completely relate to what you're saying, Michelle. Thank you so much for sharing that with us. So what then is one valuable free action that our audience can implement that will help them to solve those kinds of problems?

04:40 MICHELLE – Valuable Free Action (VFA)
Yeah. So I use a framework, in all the work I do. It's called the GEO framework, and it talks about the jobs marketing does for you because marketing only does three jobs. Right? It the G is for grow, grow your audience, your brand awareness, your relationships.

E is for engage and nurture. Basically, how are you getting these people ready to work with you? And then the O is your offer, inviting people in to your offer.

So now that you know what jobs your marketing and your message should be doing for you, you can actually audit what marketing you're doing. So if you're like, I'm on five social media platforms. It's like, cool.

And… that is all growth activities. Right? Try just being on one of those. Like, eliminate the rest. Because as long as you have grow, engage. offer covered, you can have a really simple marketing strategy with, like, two or three marketing tactics.

But you have to know where you're overmarketing and where you're overindexing for doing too much.

ROBIN
Wow. I can almost feel the weight lifting off my shoulders as what you're saying sinks in the impact of what you're saying. It's very profound actually. It's very simple what you're saying, but it's actually very profound.

Alright. So now, we have a better understanding of what you do, Michelle. Let's dive into GoalBusting, focusing on how to maximize productive time to achieve business goals. So my question is, can you share any tips or advice for someone looking to improve their productivity habits, please?

06:25 MICHELLE – Valuable Productive Action (VPA)
Yes. So the first one I would share is be aware of your natural rhythms of when you're more most productive during the day.

I know that I am productive between nine AM to noon, then I eat lunch, and then I don't get another good hour, but two to four PM is a dead zone. Like, I can't get much done. Like, maybe some admin, maybe a nap, and then I get a little burst at the end of the day. So if I know how my productivity flows, I can work with it because I'm better focused in the morning than I am at two o'clock.

Another thing that I've been doing a lot is, capturing my ideas as they come. I created a little form in Notion that's just like my idea database. So if I have, like, this great idea, I can open that up and fill out this little form about, like, what's the idea? What's any supporting information? And how do you think you might use this? And then I can submit it and go back and look at it whenever I'm, like, doing marketing or need some inspiration. So those are two things that I pay attention to that help me be more productive.

ROBIN
Yeah. They're two great things, actually. I love that. There's the mind dump, and then there's the knowing your energy patterns. And because most people, I, myself, definitely included, can relate to that. After lunch is definitely not a productive time.

It doesn't matter… I try to avoid high carbohydrates lunches and that helps, but not a lot.

You still want that nap, don't you? Yeah. Perfect. Okay.

So moving on, what should I have asked you today, Michelle, that I didn't? And what is your answer, please? And that gives you free reign, really, to say anything you like.

Yeah. So I feel like the question you should have asked me is, what is the relationship between messaging and marketing? Because I think these things get confused. And I think it's helpful to define what messaging is, what marketing is, and what copy is because we hear they're all related to each other. So messaging is what to say. So your key themes, your key ideas.

Copy is how to say it, so what you're writing in your marketing or on your website. And then marketing amplifies the what, the message.
So what I have seen so many times is people go out and market their business, but they don't have a message, a consistent message to amplify.

So messaging and creating your marketing message that actually leads clients to work with you and not just, like, random content pillars that you're putting out how to content, Like, that is the key to market effectively. Because if you don't have anything to amplify, it's you're not going to see the results of clients coming into the door or people asking you to share your expertise.

ROBIN
Wow. Thank you. What I love about everything you said today in answer to just the five questions is that everything you said sounds really simple. And that it is really simple. But the impact it will have is profound, hugely powerful. That everything you said, including and especially the last point about messaging versus marketing.

So important. Easy to remember, but you've gotta do it. You've gotta do it. noise your marketing as well.

I mean, I'm looking forward to going through this podcast myself and making my own notes because it's like, yeah, I need to do these things as well. Fantastic. Thank you so much. Michelle.
